My Story / Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card Review: Pros, Cons, and Should You Get It?

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card Review: Pros, Cons, and Should You Get It?

If you’re a frequent Delta flyer or someone who’s planning to travel more in 2025, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card could be your new favorite wallet companion. But is it worth the $350 annual fee?

Here’s everything you need to know before you hit “Apply Now.”

💳 Pros of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card

1. Generous Welcome Bonus

Earn 60,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 in purchases in your first 6 months. That’s enough for at least one roundtrip ticket, depending on your destination.

2. Annual Companion Certificate

Each year upon renewal, get a Domestic Main Cabin round-trip companion certificate. Just pay taxes and fees (usually under $80). This perk alone can easily offset the annual fee.

3. Free Checked Bag

You and up to 8 companions on the same reservation get the first checked bag free—a potential savings of up to $60 per person on a roundtrip.

4. Priority Boarding

Enjoy Main Cabin 1 Priority Boarding, which means you’ll have early access to overhead bins and a more relaxed boarding experience.

5. Bonus Miles Categories

  • 3X miles on Delta purchases
  • 2X miles at restaurants & U.S. supermarkets
  • 1X mile on all other eligible purchases

6. No Foreign Transaction Fees

Take this card with you on your next international adventure—there are zero foreign transaction fees.

7. TSA PreCheck or Global Entry Credit

Get a statement credit every 4 years for Global Entry ($100) or every 4.5 years for TSA PreCheck ($85).

😕 Cons of the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card

1. $350 Annual Fee

It’s a steep cost if you’re not flying Delta at least a few times a year or taking advantage of the companion ticket.

2. No Sky Club Lounge Access

This card does not include lounge access. If that’s important to you, consider upgrading to the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Card.

3. Delta-Specific Rewards

This card is best for Delta loyalists. If you prefer flying different airlines or using flexible travel rewards, another travel card may be a better fit.

4. High Spend Required for Medallion Status

You can earn MQDs (Medallion Qualification Dollars), but the spending thresholds for elite status are still relatively high.

✈️ Who Should Get the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card?

This card is a great fit if you:

  • Fly Delta at least 2–3 times a year
  • Want to earn and redeem miles with Delta
  • Would use the companion certificate
  • Value free checked bags and priority boarding

It’s also a smart choice for couples or families who travel together and want to save on baggage fees and earn rewards toward future flights.

💡 Apply if the “pros” of the SkyMiles Platinum Amex work for you

If you’re a Delta traveler looking for a mid-tier airline card with strong travel perks, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card is worth considering—especially if you can fully leverage the companion certificate, welcome bonus, and baggage perks.
